Dear Fellow Book Lovers,

There’s a special kind of magic that happens when we open a book. It’s the feeling of stepping into a new world, meeting characters who become lifelong friends, and discovering truths about ourselves and the universe hidden within the pages. Books have a way of transporting us, inspiring us, and connecting us in ways nothing else can.

As lovers of stories, we are connected by our shared appreciation for the written word. Whether you savor the scent of fresh ink on paper, prefer the convenience of an e-book, or listen to the comforting cadence of an audiobook, we are all part of the same fellowship of readers who believe in the power of storytelling.

In every chapter we read, we find echoes of our own hopes, dreams, and struggles. We see reflections of our humanity in characters who remind us of the complexity and beauty of life. And through these stories, we gain empathy, knowledge, and courage to face our own problems with grace.

So, let this letter be a celebration of our shared love for books. Let it remind us to make time for the stories that enrich our lives, to explore genres and authors that challenge us, and to share the joy of reading with those around us. Let us also cherish the writers who pour their souls onto the page, gifting us the stories that stay with us long after the last sentence.

To all of you who find solace, adventure, and meaning between the covers of a book, thank you for being part of this timeless tradition. May your shelves always overflow, and may you always find yourself lost in a story that feels like home.

Sliding into the New Year: Embrace the Moments That Matter

As the clock strikes midnight and the calendar flips to a brand-new year, a sense of excitement fills the air. We make resolutions, set goals, and promise ourselves that this year will be different, better, and more fulfilling. But in the hustle of achieving and improving, it’s easy to forget one of life’s simplest yet most profound lessons: to be present and savor the everyday moments.

This year, instead of racing to check items off a never-ending to-do list, let’s focus on sliding into the New Year with intention. Think of it as a graceful transition rather than a sprint.

Moving from one activity to the next is tempting in our fast-paced world. But what if we made a habit of pausing? Whether it’s the morning’s first sip of coffee, the sound of laughter from loved ones, or the beauty of a sunset, these small moments are the threads that weave a meaningful life.

Take time to reflect on what brings you joy. Gratitude is a powerful practice that shifts your mindset and helps you appreciate the here and now. What lights you up? Maybe it’s painting, gardening, dancing, or simply curling up with a good book. Too often, we let responsibilities overshadow our passions. This year, give yourself permission to prioritize the things that make your heart sing. Schedule time for them as you would an important meeting because nurturing your joy is just as crucial.

In an age of constant notifications and endless scrolling, being fully present can feel like an act of rebellion. Yet it’s one of the most rewarding choices you can make. Whether you’re sharing a meal with friends, reading a book, or walking in nature, commit to being there wholeheartedly. Put the phone down, make eye contact, and engage with the world around you.

Life isn’t about getting everything right; it’s about showing up. Celebrate your small wins and learn from the setbacks. Each day is a chance to grow, and every step forward—no matter how small—is worth acknowledging.

Carve out time for introspection amidst the busyness of life. Journaling, meditating, or simply sitting can help you reconnect with yourself. Reflection allows you to assess what’s working, what isn’t, and what matters to you.

Relationships are the heartbeat of life. Make time to connect with the people who matter most to you. Whether it’s a quick phone call, a heartfelt conversation, or a spontaneous adventure, these connections bring richness to your days and strengthen the bonds that sustain you.

As we step into this New Year, let’s remember that life isn’t a race to the finish line. It’s a journey to be savored. By taking time to be present, prioritizing joy, and cherishing the moments that matter, we can make every day meaningful.

So, here’s to sliding into the New Year with grace. May it be a year filled with laughter, love, and the sweet satisfaction of knowing you’re living each day fully and authentically. Let’s not just wish for a Happy New Year—let’s create it, one beautiful moment at a time.

The Joy of Christmas

The twinkling lights, the scent of pine, the familiar carols filling the air—Christmas is more than just a holiday; it’s a feeling, a warmth that spreads through our hearts and homes. It’s a time when the world seems to slow down just enough for us to catch our breath, hold our loved ones close, and savor the moments that truly matter.

At its heart, Christmas is about connection. It’s the time of year when families and friends come together, bridging the distances—both physical and emotional—that may have grown throughout the year. Whether it’s around a dinner table laden with festive treats or beside a roaring fire, these moments of togetherness remind us of what’s truly important: love, laughter, and shared memories.

There’s a special kind of joy that comes from giving, and at Christmas, it shines brighter than ever. It’s not just about the presents wrapped in sparkling paper but the thought and care behind each gift. A handwritten card, a handmade ornament, or even a simple gesture of kindness can light up someone’s day. The true magic of giving lies in the happiness it brings—not only to the receiver but also to the giver.

The beauty of Christmas often lies in the little things—a child’s laughter as they spot the first snowflake, the soft glow of a candle in the window, or the feeling of a cozy blanket as you sip on hot cocoa. These small, quiet joys are what make the season truly magical. In the hustle and bustle, take a moment to pause, breathe, and soak in these fleeting but precious moments.

Christmas traditions, whether old or new, carry a charm that warms the soul. From decorating the tree with ornaments that tell stories of years gone by to baking cookies that fill the house with the smell of nostalgia, these rituals connect us to our past while creating memories for the future. They remind us that joy is found in the simplest of moments, shared with those we love.

Christmas is also a time of hope—a belief in new beginnings and brighter days ahead. It’s a season that encourages us to be kinder, more generous, and more forgiving. It’s a time to reflect on the blessings we have and to share those blessings with others, spreading joy in ways big and small.

As we celebrate the season, let’s carry the joy of Christmas in our hearts, not just for a day but throughout the year. May your days be filled with love, your nights with peace, and your moments with happiness. Whether your holiday is grand or simple, may it be rich in the things that truly matter.

Here’s to a season of warmth, wonder, and joy.

The Thanksgiving Cocktail: A Tale of Cranberries, Pineapples, and Oranges

It was a chilly Thanksgiving morning in the small town of Evergreen Falls, where the snow always seemed to arrive just in time for the holiday. At the heart of the town stood the Silver Maple Inn, a cozy family-owned bed-and-breakfast famous for its roaring fireplace, delicious food, and, most notably, its unique Thanksgiving cocktail.

The cocktail was a tradition passed down for generations, known as the “Harvest Glow.” Its ingredients—cranberries, pineapples, and oranges—seemed simple, but the secret was in how they were combined. Sylvia Maple, the current innkeeper and great-granddaughter of the inn’s founder, guarded the recipe like a treasure.

Sylvia would gather the townspeople and guests every Thanksgiving in the inn’s grand hall. As the aroma of roasted turkey filled the air, she would serve the cocktail, a vibrant crimson drink that sparkled like autumn leaves in the sunlight. For those who tasted it, the cocktail wasn’t just a drink—it was a memory, a feeling of warmth and celebration.

This year, however, Sylvia faced a crisis. As she unpacked the morning’s delivery of fresh produce, she discovered the pineapples were missing.

“How can I make the Harvest Glow without pineapples?” she fretted.

The tart sweetness of the tropical fruit was essential to balance the bold cranberries and the zesty oranges.

Sylvia’s nephew, 12-year-old Max, overheard her distress. “Aunt Sylvia, can’t we just use something else? Maybe apples or pears?”

Sylvia shook her head. “No, Max. Pineapples bring the brightness that makes it special. Without them, it’s just…juice.”

Determined not to let the tradition falter, Sylvia decided to find pineapples herself. But on Thanksgiving morning, the local grocers were closed. Word spread quickly through the town, and soon Sylvia had a small army of helpers: Max, his best friend Emma, and even Old Joe, the town’s retired postman. Together, they set off on a snowy adventure to neighboring towns, searching for pineapples.

Meanwhile, back at the inn, the guests began to gather. As the hours passed and Sylvia hadn’t returned, the guests decided to take matters into their own hands. Inspired by the Harvest Glow’s spirit of togetherness, they began experimenting with different fruit combinations.

“What if we use pomegranates?” someone suggested. “Or mix in a splash of maple syrup for warmth?”

Sylvia returned just as the sun set, holding a single pineapple triumphantly over her head. But when she saw the guests laughing, mixing, and tasting their improvised drinks, her heart swelled. She realized the true magic of the Harvest Glow wasn’t just the pineapple—it was the community it brought together.

Fading into fall

Just as the leaves burn with fiery hues before surrendering to the pull of gravity, so too should we transform. Every day, we should strive to outgrow the person we were yesterday, to forge a better version of ourselves. But too often, we become ensnared in the frantic race through the monotony of our routines, blind to the subtle, magnificent changes unfurling around us. Generations before us spoke of the wisdom that lies in nature’s rhythm, the unspoken truth that understanding the world outside would lead to a greater understanding of the world within. Yet, I had been deaf to those whispers, blind to the signs. I was rushing through life as if it were a race to be won, my eyes fixed ahead but never truly seeing.

I didn’t notice the quiet unfolding of life—the flowers bursting into bloom, the sky turning a deeper, more vivid shade of blue, the ominous swell of gray clouds that announced the rain, or the fall of snow blanketing the earth. I was speeding through my existence, missing the poetry of every moment, until one day… it happened.

Someone I knew—a soul with dreams—slipped away from this life. Another person, like me, had been rushing, racing, and now their journey had ended, unfinished. I felt the weight of it settle over me, heavy and cold. It hit like a wave, crashing through the comfortable ignorance of my hurried life.

That night, I sat on the porch, a cup of tea growing cold in my hands. My gaze drifted upward, caught by the full moon hanging in the sky—so timeless, so patient, as if it had all the time in the universe. The moon didn’t rush; it moved with grace, circling the earth like a watchful guardian. How many lives had it seen come and go? How many hearts had it watched break, how many dreams had faded beneath its light? It had been there for countless generations, casting its glow over triumphs, failures, joy, and sorrow. And it would be there tomorrow, and the next day, without hurry, without worry.

At that moment, something inside me shifted. For the first time, I truly saw—summer was giving way to autumn, the roses had wilted, their once vibrant petals now curled and browned, while the mums flourished in their place. The air was no longer warm, but crisp, sharp even. The light faded sooner each evening, the shadows stretching longer as if the world itself was urging me to slow down, to see.

I realized then, in the stillness, that life isn’t a race to be run, but a series of seasons to be lived, felt, and embraced. And just as one season falls into another, so too can we transform. We can shed the past, like trees shed their leaves, and become something new—better, wiser, more attuned to the world around us. We can choose to be more present, more aware, and more alive than we were the day before.

Because life, like the moon, circles back. But we, unlike it, have only a finite time to find our place in the sky.

Free spirits

The ones who believe in who they are without needing validation from anyone are the free spirits. They need love and attention, support and sunshine, to thrive in a world consumed by the mechanics of everyday life. You will find them wandering in forests among butterflies and wild flowers, or in bookstores with cups of steaming coffee and books. Look for them in raindrops or listen for the sounds of their voices in wind whispers but, more often than not, you will find them melting away in the colors of rainbows.

The Power of Gentleness

In a world that often celebrates assertiveness and dominance, gentleness can be overlooked or even misunderstood as a sign of weakness. However, gentleness is a profound strength, offering a compassionate and thoughtful approach to interacting with others and ourselves. It involves patience, understanding, and a willingness to listen and empathize. Gentleness is not about being passive or submissive but about choosing to respond with calmness and care, even in the face of provocation or challenge.

A gentle approach helps to diffuse tension and conflict. By responding calmly, we can navigate stressful situations more effectively, leading to a more peaceful and harmonious environment. Gentleness allows us to be more in tune with our emotions and those of others. This emotional intelligence helps us manage our feelings better and respond to others with empathy and compassion.

Choose your words carefully and speak with kindness. Give others space to express themselves without interruption or judgment. Put yourself in others’ shoes. Try to understand their perspectives and feelings before reacting. This empathetic approach can transform interactions and resolve conflicts. Engage in small acts of kindness daily. Whether it’s offering a smile, holding the door open, or simply saying thank you, these gestures of gentleness can brighten someone’s day and create a ripple effect of positivity.

Happy Mother’s Day

Dear Friends,

As the sun rose on this seemingly perfect day, I couldn’t help but think of Ion Creanga’s words about his mother. His description of his mother in “Childhood Memories” was so beautifully crafted and it stirred up conflicted emotions within me. Memories of my own childhood and relationship with my mother came rushing back, both happy and painful.

“Asa era ea mama in vremea copilariei mele, plina de minunatii, pe cat mi-aduc si eu aminte. Si-mi aduc bine aminte, caci bratele ei m-au leganat cand ii sugeam tata cea dulce si ma alintam la sanu-i, gangurind si uitandu-ma in ochi-i cu drag! Si sange din sangele ei si carne din carnea ei am imprumutat, si a vorbi de la dansa am invatat. Iar intelepciunea de la Dumnezeu, cand vine vremea de a pricepe omul ce-i bine si ce-i rau.”

That’s how my mother was during my childhood—full of wonders— as far as I can remember. And I remember it well because her arms rocked me as I fed and cuddled at her sweet breast, babbling and looking into her eyes fondly! And blood from her blood and flesh from her flesh I borrowed and speaking also from her I learned. And wisdom from God I received when the time came to understand right and wrong.

Ion Creanga, Amintiri din copilarie (Childhood Memories)

There comes a time when we must stop criticizing our mothers. It seems that we never stop blaming the mothers.  What I want to say today is: Can we take a break—just for one day —and show them some compassion? Because being a perfect mother is an unattainable goal. Our expectations of mothers are unrealistic. We expect our mothers to embody Mother Mary, Mother Theresa, Superwoman, and Gaia, all at once. It’s an unforgiving standard of perfection.

May God have mercy on your mother if she ever falls short. May He have mercy on her if she is exhausted and overwhelmed. May He guide her when she doesn’t understand her kids. May He grant her strength if she has desires and longings. May He be with her in moments of terror, despair, hopelessness, confusion, or rage. May He be there for her if life disappoints her. May He support her if she struggles with addiction or a mental illness. And may we forgive her if she ever breaks down or loses control because we often brand mothers as “bad” for any mistakes they make.

Today, instead of judging mothers, let’s take a moment to show them mercy. And if you are a mother yourself and constantly scold yourself for not measuring up …can you release that burden for just one day?  Just for today. Let us show kindness and compassion towards mothers.

Love,

Carmen
